TEHRAN (IQNA) – The labor and social affairs ministry of Afghanistan announced Tuesday as a public holiday in the country to celebrate the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) birthday.

According to khabarnameh website, the ministry said Tuesday, November 20, will be a public holiday.

It marks the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PUBH) according to Sunni Muslims.

Shia Muslims believe the 17th day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal (November 25 this year) in the lunar Hijri calendar marks the occasion while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (November 20) as the birthday of the last prophet.

Islam is the official state religion of Afghanistan, with approximately 99.7 percent of the Afghan population being Muslim.

The majority of Afghans practice Sunni Islam, while around 15 percent are believed to be Shias.
