TEHRAN (IQNA) – Matar Tares is the name of a village where all of the families have at one memorizer of the entire Quran.

The village is near Sinnuris, a city in Faiyum Governorate in the middle of the country.

Years ago a Maktab (traditional Quran school) was launched in the village and since then, the number of those learning the Holy Book by heart has been growing.

There is not a single family without a Quran memorizer in the village, with all members of some of the families having learned the Quran by heart.

Currently, Matar Tares has more than 20,000 memorizers of the Quran, according to Watan daily.

Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Yusuf, a villager, says there is a kind of rivalry among families to memorize the Holy Book.

He says children start memorizing the Quran at five and complete the process in about six years.

That is why most of the students who reach the sixth grade or a few years later have memorized the entire Quran, he adds.

He also notes that the children in the village have won many titles in Quran contests at the national and international levels.

They are successful in other fields as well, Sheikh Yusuf states.

Every year a ceremony is held in the village to honor Quran memorizers and the villagers are now preparing for this year’s event.
