IQNA – A Bangladeshi Quran expert underscored the need for taking recourse to the Holy Quran in order for new Islamic civilization making.

Bangladeshi Quran expert Ahmed bin Yusuf al-Azhari

“All of us must resort to the Quran and follow its teachings,” Ahmed bin Yusuf al-Azhari, who is a member of the panel of judges of Iran’s 40th International Quran Competition, told IQNA in an interview.

“We should teach the Quran to kids from an early age and begin familiarizing the society with the Islamic culture from schools,” he added.

“That is how we can essentially make the future society Islamic and establish the new Quranic and Islamic civilization.”

Asked about his Quranic activities, al-Azhari said he serves as the chairman of the Quran Recitation Society known as IQRA international Institute.

He said he learned the Quran with his father’s encouragement and studied at a Islamic school.

In 2002, he went to Egypt and studied at the Al-Azhar’s Qara’at Center for eight years, benefiting from the expertise of such masters as Sheikh Raghib Mustafa, Sheikh Abdul Ati Nasif and Sheikh Nabil.

He then returned to Bangladesh and started teaching the Quran in his homeland.

He said his father Sheikh Yusuf was a prominent qari in the history of Bangladesh and Pakistan (From 1947 to 1971 Bangladesh and Pakistan were administered under the same government).

“My father launched Quranic circles and programs in Bangladesh and invited renowned Egyptian qaris like Sheikh Abdul Basit Abdul Samad, Sheikh al-Husari, Sheikh Kamil Yusuf al-Bahtimi, and others to (Pakistan and Bangladesh).”

He noted that thanks to his father’s efforts, many Quranic centers were established in Bangladesh, many qaris were trained, and many international Quranic programs were held in the country.

After the death of his father, al-Azhari became the Sheikh-ul-Qurra (top qari) of Bangladesh.

Elsewhere in his remarks, al-Azhari highlighted the longstanding cultural bonds between Iran and Bangladesh and said the people of his country love Iran and know many of Iran’s prominent qaris and are keen to listen to their recitations.
