TEHRAN (IQNA) – Lying has detrimental effects on individuals and society, however, refraining from or concealing the truth is as much inappropriate. This can raise suspicion in the community and make it vulnerable to threats.

Rejecting or hiding the truth has been one of the most important factors that have misled people and communities. This has affected the Muslim community from early Islam and this is why it is considered among the big sins.

For instance, a number of Jewish scholars who knew the signs of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and had come to Medina to see the last prophet, who had been mentioned in the Torah, refrained from believing in him as they felt that they would lose their worldly positions. They did not tell the truth and instead became enemies of the Prophet. This is when verse 159 of Surah Baqarah was revealed: “Those who hide the clear verses and the guidance We have sent down after We have clarified them in the Book for the people shall be cursed by Allah and cursed by the cursers.”

Rejecting the truth will surely create problems for society. Those who say the truth and live an honest life but those who reject or hide the truth raise suspicion of others. Others may misuse this even if it is related to an insignificant issue.

Rejecting the truth is a big sin and its punishment is that they will be cursed by Allah and people unless they repent and revise their behavior. “But those who disbelieve, and die disbelieving shall incur the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.” (Surah Baqarah, verse 161)

Of course, humans sometimes do not find the opportunity to repent.
