India: Police Seeking to Identify Muslims Who Offered Eid Prayers on Kanpur Streets

NEW DELHI (IQNA) – Police in Kanpur, India’s state of Uttar Pradesh, have registered an FIR against 40 Muslims for offering Eid al-Adha prayers on the streets.

An FIR (First Information Report) is a written document prepared by the police when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence.

Of the many people who went to offer prayers at the Eidgah Masjid in the Jajmau area of Kanpur on Thursday, some reached too late, and so, they decided to sit on the road and offer prayers said locals.

There is a government direction against offering prayer on roads, said police who are trying to identify those prayed on roads with the help of photographs and videos.

An FIR was registered against 40 unidentified persons under IPC sections 186 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint).

No arrests have been made so far.

The new FIR comes three months after three separate FIRs were lodged in Kanpur against more than 1,000 Muslims and an Eidgah committee over the offering of prayers on roads on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.
