KABUL (IQNA) – A deadly explosion occurred at a mosque in northern Afghanistan on Friday, reportedly killing and injuring dozens of worshipers.

The blast took place inside Imam Zaman mosque in Pul-e-Khumri, the capital of Baghlan province, during the Friday prayers.

Provincial Director for Information and Culture Asadullah Mustafa Hashimi confirmed the incident but did not provide further details. The cause of the blast and the identity of the perpetrators are still unknown. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Citing a source, Amu TV reported that at least 17 people were killed and “dozens more” were wounded in the explosion.

The Taliban, who control most of Baghlan province, have not commented on the incident.

The blast is the latest in a series of violent attacks in Afghanistan, where the security situation has deteriorated since the withdrawal of foreign troops. The UN has warned that civilian casualties have reached record levels this year, with more than 5,000 killed or injured in the first half of 2021.
