LONDON (IQNA) – A group of Muslims in Derby is set to hold an event to raise public awareness about Islam and shatter misconceptions.

Derby’s annual Mawlid in the City event, organized by the Islamic not-for-profit group As-Siraat, presents a valuable opportunity for individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of Islam. Taking place on Saturday, September 23, at St Peter’s Street in Derby, this event forms part of a national initiative that occurs annually in September/October and aims to educate the public about the Islamic faith.

Last year marked the first occurrence of the event since the Covid-19 pandemic necessitated the cancellation of gatherings in 2020 and 2021.

Reflecting on the success of the previous year's event, which took place on October 8, organizer Shazad Riaz expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming gathering, highlighting the numerous positive conversations that took place. Riaz shared his optimism with the Derby Telegraph, stating, "We always look forward to it."

Volunteers from As-Siraat will be present at the event, offering gifts and engaging in discussions with attendees about Islam. These interactions will take place at their designated table from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Riaz acknowledged that while instances of misconceptions about Islam are relatively infrequent, there are occasionally individuals who hold preconceived notions fueled by media portrayals or hearsay. He emphasized that the aim of the event is not to engage in debates but rather to share the message of Islam.

Riaz explained, "If someone is expressing those views, we'll listen to them, acknowledge them, and tell them we appreciate their opinion, which has been formed through their experiences, before letting them get on their way. We'll explain that the interactions or experiences they might've had might not be necessarily representative of the faith."

He added that they can offer examples from the Islamic faith to highlight the kind of character it promotes, stating that it is unfair to judge the entire faith based on isolated experiences.

The event precedes the Mawlid (the Holy Prophet's birthday) which is believed to fall on Wednesday, September 27. For many Muslims, this occasion holds significant importance as it serves as a time to learn about and reflect upon the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Across the globe, celebrations of the Prophet's birthday often feature stalls selling Islamic books, leaflets, clothing, prayer mats, and other related items.
